Dentures are an essential part of life for many. They help restore dental health and can be a source of confidence, self-esteem, and happiness. As such, care for dentures can be an important part of the daily routines of denture wearers. Dr. Julie Glud of Dental Care of Lombard can help you get the most out of your prosthetic to ensure its longest life possible.

Brush, Brush, Brush!

Removable dentures are made from synthetic materials like acrylic and metal. It is important, therefore, to clean them regularly.

While most patients know the importance of keeping natural teeth clear of plaque (a sticky deposit of bacteria that forms on teeth, especially after eating and drinking), few realize that plaque can also form on dentures. Similar to the effects plaque has on natural teeth, plaque can also cause gum disease and bad breath in denture wearers as well.

To keep plaque at bay, it is important to brush your dentures at least once daily. Brushing them twice a day is an even better insurance policy against bacteria and other harmful deposits that can build up.

Remember to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damage to the denture.

When brushing your dentures also keep in mind that many toothpastes on the market contain ingredients that can be harmful as they can be abrasive for prosthetic teeth. Whitening toothpastes can be especially detrimental as they tend to contain peroxide. Peroxide does not whiten denture teeth significantly and can instead change the color of dentures.

Brushing your dentures with toothbrushes and pastes specifically designed for dentures can help mitigate any adverse effects on your prosthetic.

Handle With Care

While dentures may seem sturdy, they are in fact fragile and can break easily if dropped. As a result, place a folded towel on the bathroom counter before removing the dentures to clean them after a meal or during your nightly oral hygiene routine This ensures a soft, protective cushion should the dentures accidentally drop.

Use a Denture Cleaning Solution

Dentures need to stay moist in order to keep their shape. That is why it is recommended they be soaked in a denture-cleaning solution overnight. Soaking them also keeps them sanitary. An effective solution can kill 99.9% of bacteria that can penetrate surface pores on dentures.

A mixture of mild soap and water will suffice if denture-cleaning solution is unavailable. (Important! Keep in mind that dentures should never be cleaned or soaked in hot or boiling water. The heat can cause materials used in the prosthetic to warp.)

Denture Adhesive Tips

If adhesive is being used, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Excess adhesive should be removed from dentures on a daily/nightly basis by brushing them with a soft-bristled toothbrush, denture-friendly toothpaste or a mixture of mild soap and water.

When to Call Your Dentist

You should call your dentist when dentures become worn or broken, or when they make noise when talking or eating. A dentist should also be called if dentures begin to fit loosely. Loose dentures can lead to irritation, sores and infection.

Remember that checkups, scheduled every six months, are an important part of dental care and overall dental health.
