What to Expect Immediately After Your Dental Bridge Placement

Traditional Dental Bridge

Most of our patients are able to return to work shortly after having their new dental bridge placed.

If you are not using implant-supported bridges, you will not have to worry about a lengthy recovery period. There can be a short adjustment period, though, as your mouth adjusts to the new prosthetic. Some patients may experience:

  • Heightened temperature sensitivity
  • The sensation that their bite is “off”
  • Sensitivity to pressure from biting and eating

These sensations are often due to the small layer of enamel that is removed before your dental crowns are placed. The crowns act as abutments for the dental bridge. Our office uses high-quality materials that mimic the look, feel, and function of natural teeth, but there can still be an adjustment period of a few days.

Some patients need up to a few weeks to fully adjust to their new dental bridge. Some patients find relief in using a straw while drinking cold liquids in order to bypass their sensitive teeth. If you experience these normal side effects for more than two or three weeks, please let Dr. Glud know. She may be able to recommend remedies.

Implant-Supported Dental Bridge

Our office also offers implant-supported dental bridges. This restorative option uses a titanium post that is placed in your jaw to support the dental bridge. The treatment timeline for an implant-supported bridge can be anywhere from three to six months or longer. By the time your dental bridge is placed, your implant will be fully healed. Your implant-supported bridge does not require shaving enamel from a natural tooth, meaning you can forgo the sensitivity side effects that are sometimes associated with traditional dental bridges.

Dental Bridge Aftercare Tips

With proper care and maintenance, your dental bridge can last 15 or more years. You can add years to the life of your new prosthetic by following these simple tips.

  • Avoid chewing hard foods like bones and shells
  • Prevent gum disease with good oral hygiene habits
  • Avoid sticky foods that can pull and dislodge your bridge
  • Brush twice a day and floss regularly
  • Avoid tobacco products
  • Use a floss threader to clean under your bridge
  • Report any dental bridge damage to your dentist immediately

Traditional dental bridges and implant-supported bridges rely on healthy gums and healthy jawbone tissue for stability and support. This is why twice-a-year dental cleanings and exams are critical to ensuring the longevity of your new prosthetic.
