The three most common types of dental bridges are a traditional dental bridge, cantilever bridge, and implant-supported bridge.
Without knowing the basics about these types of bridges, it’s difficult to know which one would be best for your smile. In this blog, Dr. Julie Glud explains each type of bridge and what she recommends them for.
Traditional Dental Bridge
Traditional dental bridges are the most common and popular type of bridge. These are usually recommended when the patient has two healthy teeth on either side of the gap left by their missing teeth. The traditional bridge is comprised of two crowns and one, two, or three pontics.
To place the dental bridge, the dentist will remove a small amount of dental enamel from the two natural teeth beside the gap. This deters some patients but is what makes the traditional bridge so durable and long-lasting.
Cantilever Bridge
When only one tooth is available to hold a bridge, your dentist may recommend a cantilever bridge. This is more typical for patients missing a tooth on either side of their front teeth and not recommended for patients missing a tooth in the back of the mouth because cantilever bridges cannot withstand the amount of bite force placed on the back teeth.
For this type of missing tooth, your dentist may also recommend a dental implant. However, a cantilever bridge is much more affordable and much less time consuming.
Implant-Supported Bridge
Developments in implantology has made using dental implants one of the best options for patients with missing teeth. An implant-supported bridge is especially beneficial because putting too many implants in a row has proven to lead to major complications.
Patients with three or more missing teeth are excellent candidates for implant-supported bridges so long as they have enough jawbone density to support the bridge. Patients who choose this type of dental bridge can rest assured knowing that they will have a secure, comfortable, and strong restoration that can last a lifetime.
