As the New Year approaches, many people are thinking about New Year’s resolutions. Working out, eating better, and reading more books are on nearly everyone’s list, but for many, a better oral hygiene routine would make for a better priority. You don’t have to wait until January to start; you can begin improving your oral health today!

As a family dentist, Dr. Julie Glud is committed to helping people of all ages achieve optimal oral health. Here are her oral health routine and tips for helping your children properly care for their teeth!

1. Brush properly.

Your oral hygiene is directly impacted by how and how often you brush your teeth. You should brush once in the morning and in the evening for at least two minutes each time. While brushing, be sure to give each part of your mouth the same amount of attention—especially your back molars.

Make sure to brush beneath the gum line and scrub the front, back, and chewing surface of each tooth.

To ensure you are getting the most out of brushing your teeth, consider these tips:

  • Buy a new toothbrush every three months.
  • Use an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste.
  • Scrape your tongue.

Teach your kids good brushing habits and techniques by making this time fun and enjoyable! Try out these fun ideas:

  • Play their favorite song and dance together while you both brush your teeth.
  • Buy them a singing toothbrush that they will enjoy using.
  • Make up a story where the toothbrush is the hero of their mouth. (For example, Cavity Monsters have invaded Mouth Kingdom and only Prince Toothbrush can ward them off.)

2. Floss regularly.

Flossing guarantees that any remaining food particles or plaque is removed from between your teeth. You should floss at least once a day. We recommend in the evening after you’ve finished your last meal of the day.

You should use whatever type of floss is most comfortable for you; your choices include:

  • Regular dental floss
  • Disposable dental flossers
  • Electric flossers

Each of these options will achieve the same goal: helping you maintain a healthy smile.

Be sure to run the floss up the side of each tooth to remove any plaque that could turn into tartar and cause tooth decay or gum disease.

To help your children develop this habit, find the floss that is easiest for them to use and let them watch you floss before they do it on their own. Remember, your child wants to be just like you! Your example will make all the difference in their oral health.

3. Use mouthwash.

An antibacterial mouthwash can benefit your oral health by:

  • Removing loosened plaque and food particles
  • Reduce the number of disease-causing bacteria in your mouth
  • Significantly reducing bad breath
  • Curing canker sores

Follow the instructions on your ADA-approved mouthwash to experience these benefits. You may choose a mouthwash that whitens your teeth as well!

There are many kid-friendly types of mouthwash to choose from. If you want your child to use mouthwash, allow them to pick the flavor, but make sure they are old enough to know not to swallow it! Most dentists recommend mouthwash for children age six and older.
