Bone deterioration, shifting teeth, and gum disease are just a few effects of untreated tooth loss. At Dental Care of Lombard, Dr. Julie Glud provides her patients with many restorative options, including dental bridges

Dr. Glud’s expertise in cosmetic and restorative dentistry allows her to create dental bridges that are functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing. Discussing common myths and facts about dental bridges will help you determine if a dental bridge is right for you.

Myths

  • Bridges can replace all missing teeth. Dental bridges are best for patients who are missing one to three teeth in a row. Traditional dental bridges require the use of abutting teeth to secure the restorative device. Patients missing most or all of their teeth may benefit more from dentures or dental implants.
  • Dental bridges are noticeable. As opposed to the bridges of yesteryear, modern dental bridges are nearly indistinguishable from natural teeth.
  • Bridges move. Bridges are designed to be immobile. Unlike dentures, dentists secure dental bridges using a strong dental cement on surrounding teeth. Patients who experience loose or wiggling bridges may have another issue, such as decaying abutment teeth.
  • Chewing with a dental bridge hurts. It is normal for a dental bridge to feel a little uncomfortable immediately after it has been fitted. After a brief adjustment period, however, patients should not feel any pain while eating or speaking. If you experience prolonged discomfort, contact your dentist immediately.
  • Traditional bridges require several visits to install. Typically, traditional bridges can be completed in as few as two visits. The initial visit involves preparation of the surrounding teeth, dental impressions, and, if necessary, placement of a temporary bridge. Once the restoration has been made, a second visit is required to fit the bridge and secure it in place.

Facts

  • Bridges can last for years. Dentists intend for dental bridges to last for more than a decade. Proper daily dental care and routine checkups and cleanings are important for the longevity of a dental bridge.
  • Preserved tooth alignment. Teeth are susceptible to shifting if missing teeth are not restored. Dental bridges preserve tooth alignment and prevent facial distortion.
  • Adjacent teeth must be prepared. Dentists must remove some enamel from the teeth to which the dental bridge is anchored. Once the enamel has been removed, it cannot be regenerated–that area will always need to be covered by a restorative device.
  • Dental bridges require special floss. The pontics of a dental bridge are fused together, which means that floss cannot get between them. A floss threader is necessary to get the floss over the dental bridge.
  • Traditional bridges may not work for everyone. If the abutment teeth are not healthy enough to support the restoration, then a traditional bridge may not be a viable option. If this is the case, then patients can consider an implant-supported bridge, which uses a surgically-implanted titanium post to bolster the restoration.
