Twice daily brushings are the first line of defense against plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth and gums. You probably don’t even think about picking up a toothbrush these days, but when was the last time you really examined your technique? The proper brushing technique can result in more plaque removal and less chance of developing cavities! Today, Dr. Julie Glud is giving you a Brushing 101 lesson, to help you make sure you’re doing the most for your teeth and gums. The more you know, the less restorative work you may need in the future (which means more cost savings!).
Dr. Julie Glud offers treatments in cosmetic, restorative, and general family dentistry in a relaxed, friendly environment in Lombard, IL. Examine Your Brush
It all starts with the right brush. Dr. Glud and our team at Dental Care of Lombard recommend choosing a soft-bristled toothbrush, as recommended by the American Dental Association. This type of brush has more flexible bristles that are delicate on the gums. When you head to the drugstore for your next toothbrush, check to see that it feels comfortable, and is long enough to comfortably reach your third molars. After you find the winner, toss a few extras into your cart: the rule we follow is to replace your toothbrush every three months. And don’t forget to replace them sooner if the bristles become frayed or bent, or you have been sick with a cold or flu. (Did you know that toothbrush bristles can harbor bacteria for days?) Practice Dentist-Approved Technique
Once you have the right brush, now you just have to use it correctly! Dr. Glud recommends brushing in short, soft strokes, and positioning the brush head at a 45-degree angle, tilted upwards toward the gum line. Don’t make the mistake of “scrubbing” your teeth vigorously to achieve a cleaner mouth. This is actually counterintuitive and over time can lead to enamel erosion or gum recession. Be gentle; if your brush’s bristles are flattened against your gums and teeth you’re probably pushing too hard.
As you brush for the recommended time of two minutes, twice a day, pay extra attention to the gum line—this is the spot where plaque often accumulates. Make a conscious effort to reach the very back molars, and the backs of your front teeth, since these are the spots that can easily be missed if you are rushing. It’s generally advised to clean the outside and inside surfaces of your top teeth, before moving to the outside and inside surfaces of your bottom teeth. Finish by running your brush carefully over each chewing surface of every tooth, and finally, the top of the tongue.
